Money Minded teaching platform

MoneyMinded teaching platform

ANZ and BSI Learning

Turning a bulky printed facilitator handbook into an intuitive online portal.

The brief

MoneyMinded is ANZ’s flagship financial education program, delivered by accredited facilitators. Historically, facilitators relied on a printed book containing all course materials, but it had become increasingly difficult to manage. When BSI was engaged to update the program as part of the annual content refresh, ANZ and BSI also recognised the need to make the materials available online.

We were brought in to lead the design of a purpose-built platform that would help facilitators access teaching materials quickly and run sessions with confidence.

Research

The core challenge was adoption: shifting from offline materials to an online portal needed to feel seamless for facilitators.

Our research highlighted two practical realities that shaped the experience from the outset:

  • Technical confidence varied widely between facilitators, from highly capable users to people who found software-heavy tools intimidating.

  • Many facilitators were time poor, often needing to prep and deliver sessions with minimal overhead.

That meant the platform had to be immediately usable for the “just get me the lesson” use case, without limiting facilitators who wanted to tailor content for different cohorts.

To ground the design in real-world teaching environments, we started by immersing ourselves in the program through stakeholder workshops with both BSI and ANZ, then ran one-on-one interviews with facilitators to understand pain points, constraints, and likely roadblocks to moving online.

From there, we developed user journeys across key facilitator types and digital confidence levels, translating needs into a prioritised set of platform requirements. Those requirements were implemented in interactive wireframes and validated through testing with real users before moving into visual design.

Design approach

Two principles guided the design:

1) Progressively reveal complexity
To avoid overwhelming time-poor or less confident facilitators, the platform was designed around a clear “default path” using pre-built lesson plans. Advanced tools were available when needed, but did not compete for attention during basic use. Facilitators could happily run sessions using pre-built content, then opt into deeper functionality as their confidence or needs grew.

2) Familiarity first
To reduce friction in the move from print to digital, the portal’s visual and structural design aligned strongly with the physical learning materials. We extended the established colour palette, illustration style, and the broader MoneyMinded “world” into a digital style guide, building comfort through recognition and consistency.

The result

The final platform gave educators and facilitators an intuitive way to access MoneyMinded materials online, with significantly more flexibility than the printed handbook. Key capabilities included:

  • Access to preset suggested lessons

  • Ability to develop and save custom lesson plans for specific groups

  • Ability to save sessions and return to work in progress

The platform balanced simplicity and depth by design: customisation was powerful, but never a barrier to basic use. This meant facilitators could move online without a steep learning curve, while still having the tools to tailor lesson delivery over time.

Just as importantly, close collaboration with BSI helped keep ANZ and downstream delivery stakeholders aligned throughout, ensuring what was designed remained compatible with the updated course materials and feasible to implement.
